How Deep Yellow Streamlined Their Operations with GIS Pro’s Enterprise GIS Solution

At GIS Pro, our goal is to help clients become autonomous with spatial data and enhance their GIS capabilities. Deep Yellow, a uranium exploration company, is a great example of this. By adopting our Enterprise GIS Solution, they transformed the way they manage and use spatial data across their organisation.

Centralised Spatial Database – A Single Source of Truth

The first step was to consolidate all GIS data into a central spatial database.
This database stores all internal GIS layers, from geology data to environmental constraints and approvals.

Public data layers are updated automatically, which saves time and reduces errors.
This automation ensures the team always works with the latest, most reliable data.

With our support, Deep Yellow’s team developed the skills to maintain this database themselves.
They are now autonomous, handling updates and maintaining data quality with confidence.

Seamless Field Data Collection with MerginMaps

For fieldwork, Deep Yellow uses MerginMaps, a tool fully integrated into the Enterprise GIS Solution.
Geologists, environmental staff, and field teams collect data directly on their mobile devices.
This covers a wide range of activities including geology mapping, rehabilitation tracking, and checking heritage sites.

Field data syncs automatically to the central database.
This gives office staff immediate access to the latest data, reducing delays and ensuring decisions are based on up-to-date information.

Web Maps for Internal Communication

Web maps play a key role in sharing spatial information across the organisation.
They allow non-technical staff to access important GIS layers, view project boundaries, and check environmental constraints.

These maps increase awareness of where things are, helping teams understand the location of key features like environmental constraints, rehabilitation areas, and infrastructure.
This spatial awareness helps teams make better decisions and reduces the risk of errors caused by outdated or incomplete information.

Staff can also print maps directly from the web portal, making it easier to prepare reports, support internal approvals, and communicate project updates.

Environmental Compliance Dashboard: Saving Time on Reporting

One of the latest additions is the custom environmental dashboard.
This dashboard tracks environmental disturbances and rehabilitation efforts across projects.

It provides real-time data needed for several mandatory compliance reports, including:

Mining Rehabilitation Fund (MRF)

Annual Environmental Report

DWER Compliance Assessment Report

These reports are traditionally time-consuming and data-intensive.
With the dashboard, most of the reporting process is now automated.
The dashboard also helps detect discrepancies early, improving data accuracy before reports are due.

The Results – Efficiency, Autonomy, and ROI

By adopting GIS Pro’s Enterprise GIS Solution, Deep Yellow achieved:

A centralised and reliable spatial data system

Reliable field data collection process

Improved internal communication through web maps

Streamlined environmental compliance reporting

Increased autonomy, reducing the need for external GIS services

This translates directly into time savings, reduced errors, and lower operational costs.
The return on investment (ROI) has been clear, with benefits seen across departments, from exploration to environment.

If your organisation wants to improve how spatial data supports your operations, get in touch with us.
We specialise in helping small and medium mining companies become spatially autonomous, just like Deep Yellow.

Over time, Sandfire Resources accumulated a significant volume of spatial data as part of its exploration activities. However, the company’s GIS database gradually fell out of date and was no longer maintained effectively. As a result, geologists could no longer confidently rely on the data, impacting operational efficiency and decision-making.

Challenge: Restoring Confidence in Exploration Data

For a resource company heavily dependent on spatial data, a reliable GIS system is essential. Sandfire Resources spatial data was fragmented, difficult to access, and lacked consistent maintenance.

To ensure that future exploration and operational decisions were based on accurate and accessible spatial information, the company required a new GIS system that could consolidate existing datasets and support ongoing data management with minimal overhead.

Solution: A Consolidated GIS System with QGIS

To address this, GIS Pro was engaged to review, redesign, and implement a GIS solution tailored to the company’s exploration workflows.

The solution included:

Consolidating existing spatial data into a single, structured geodatabase.

Integrating spatial layers with existing corporate datasets to provide a comprehensive view of exploration data.

Deploying QGIS as the primary software for geologists, ensuring that spatial data was easily accessible and could be directly utilised in day-to-day workflows.

Outcome: Enhanced Data Confidence and Streamlined Workflows

With the new GIS system in place, Sandfire Resources quickly regained control of its spatial data. The system restored confidence in the accuracy and completeness of exploration datasets while enabling more efficient workflows across the team.
